Estimated processing times are the time it takes USCIS to complete 80% of cases. Your case may be faster or slower. Ranges are shown in months.

How long is USCIS taking to process Form I-765, I-130, and other common forms?

A USCIS processing time is how long the agency typically takes to decide a specific form at a specific office. USCIS reports each one as the time it takes to complete 80% of those cases — so it is a realistic estimate, not a promise. Work permits (Form I-765), green card applications (I-485), petitions for relatives (I-130), and citizenship applications (N-400) each move on their own timeline, and the same form can take very different amounts of time depending on which service center or field office handles it. The table above shows the current ranges, in months, for the forms most of our clients file.

How do I read USCIS processing times?

Find your form, then find the office or service center listed on your receipt notice. The range shown is in months and represents how long 80% of those cases take to finish. If your case has been pending longer than the high end of the range, it is considered "outside normal processing time" — and that is usually the point at which you can submit a case inquiry to USCIS or ask an attorney to escalate it.

Why might my case take longer than the posted time?

Because the posted number only covers 80% of cases, some cases fall outside it. Common causes are a request for more evidence, a pending background check, a biometrics appointment that was missed or rescheduled, or a heavier workload at your office. If you are already past the listed time, that is the moment to get help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about USCIS processing times and what to do if your case is delayed.

A USCIS processing time is how long the agency typically takes to decide a particular form at a particular office. USCIS reports it as the time it takes to finish 80% of cases — so it is an estimate, not a guarantee. The same form can take a very different amount of time depending on which service center or field office handles it.

Form I-765 is the application for a work permit (employment authorization). Its processing time changes month to month and depends on the category you filed under and the office handling it, so check the current range above. If your work permit is close to expiring and you have not received the new one, call us — there may be steps to protect your ability to keep working.

Form I-130 is the petition a U.S. citizen or permanent resident files for a relative. Processing time depends heavily on your relationship to the petitioner and which office handles the case, so use the current range above as your starting point. After the I-130 is approved, there may be additional waiting based on the visa bulletin if a visa number is not immediately available.

Is your case taking too long?

If your application has been pending longer than the posted time, our immigration attorneys can help you file a case inquiry or push it forward.
