Question 1 of 100

What is the supreme law of the land?

How many questions are on the U.S. citizenship test?

The 2008 USCIS civics test has 100 possible questions. At your naturalization interview, the officer asks up to 10 of them out loud, and you must answer at least 6 correctly to pass — a 60% score. The officer stops once you reach 6 correct, so you will not always be asked all 10. Practicing all 100 here is the surest way to be ready for whichever ones you get.

Which answers change, and how do I keep them current?

About nine questions have answers that change over time or depend on where you live — the current President, Vice President, Speaker of the House and Chief Justice, plus your state's U.S. Senators, your U.S. Representative, your Governor, and your state capital. This tool flags those with an "Answer changes" badge instead of showing a fact that could be out of date. Always confirm the current answer on the official USCIS study page at uscis.gov/citizenship before your interview.

Can I study for the citizenship test in Spanish?

Yes. Every question and answer in this tool is available in Spanish — use the language toggle at the top of the page. Keep in mind that for most applicants the actual interview is conducted in English, so studying the English wording matters too. If you qualify for the age and residence exception (often 65 or older with 20 years as a permanent resident), you may be able to test in your own language and study a shorter list of questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the USCIS civics test, passing scores, and how to use this practice tool.

There are 100 possible civics questions on the 2008 USCIS naturalization test. At your interview, a USCIS officer asks you up to 10 of them out loud, and you must answer at least 6 correctly to pass. This tool lets you practice all 100 so nothing surprises you.

You pass the civics portion by answering 6 of the 10 questions correctly — a 60% score. As soon as you reach 6 correct answers, the officer stops asking, so you do not always have to answer all 10.

For most applicants the civics test is given orally in English, along with separate English reading and writing tests. Applicants who qualify for an age and residence exception (commonly 65 years or older with 20 years as a permanent resident) may take a simplified civics test in their own language. You can still study in Spanish here either way.

These are the 100 questions from the 2008 civics test, which is the version USCIS uses for most applicants today. A 128-question 2020 version was introduced and then rolled back, so the 2008 set is the one to study.
