If you are a foreign diplomat, a government official, or the employee of an international organization seeking entry to the U.S. to conduct official duties, you will need to obtain a diplomatic visa. Though the application process is similar to applications for many other types of visas, you will need to prove that your stay in the U.S. is solely for the purpose of engaging in official activities for your government or organization.

Allow Vásquez Law Firm, PLLC to help you navigate the application process. Our Charlotte immigration attorneys can help you seek and obtain the appropriate diplomatic visa.

Types of Diplomatic Visas

There are two types of diplomatic visas: A visas and G visas. Depending on your position and the reason for your travels, you may be eligible for one over the other.

A visas are granted to diplomats, officials, and their immediate family members. Your specific position in your government and the purpose of your visit to the U.S. will determine whether you are granted an A-1 or an A-2 visa. Personal employees, assistants, and other workers who serve diplomats with an A visa may be granted an A-3 visa.

Examples of people who may be granted an A-1 or A-2 visa include:

  • Heads of State of Government
  • Officials and employees coming to serve at a consulate or a foreign embassy
  • A government minister or cabinet member
  • Representatives of the EU or AU and their staff members
  • Foreign military members assigned to a U.S. military base, foreign embassy, or consulate

G visas are granted to officials who intend to work for international organizations in the U.S. and their immediate family members. There are five different types of G visas.
